In order to meet the significant challenges to agriculture we cannot merely grow more food. We must change the way we produce food, the way we store it, and the way society views food consumption and production.By empowering farmers to develop climate resilient agriculture, it is possible to envisage the elimination of extreme hunger in 15 years. The conservation of resources and use of environment-enhancing approaches, such as conservation agriculture, agroforestry and integrated pest management, have been shown to yield more and deliver significantly better resilience to climate extremes than conventional, chemical agriculture.

Malawi's deforestation rate is ranked No. 1 among Southern African Development Community, and 4th in the world. This is of great concern given Malawi's challenges with sol fertility and food security. The Malawian Government is said to be taking its adaptation and mitigation of the impacts of climate change seriously, viewing agriculture and natural resources as the key to poverty reduction. However, these rankings suggest further robust action is required.

As we approach 2050, the world has significant challenges that need to be tackled to ensure food and environmental security. With the global population set to increase to 9-12 billion the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation predicts that food production must increase by 70% to meet demand. At the same time increased temperatures, rising sea levels and occurrences of extreme weather events will result in reduced availability of arable land and crop productivity.

A new report was launched, by Green Peace, in July. This report demonstrates how smallholders in Kenya are adapting to the challenge wrought by climate change. In the report are several case studies that run along themes such as: water; soil fertility; water; and communities. It examines the strategies employed by smallholder farmers when dealing with challenges such as changing rainfall patterns; increases in pests and diseases; and extreme weather events.
