Methods

I will be estimating the GHG emissions produced by rice paddies under normal conditions (i.e continuously flooded paddy fields) and under AWD conditions.

Little Rice Paddy happy under conventional flooded conditions.
Equally as happy Paddy when AWD is applied instead.

.

By comparing the estimations from each scenario I can assess the effectiveness of the AWD climate smart practice in reducing GHG emissions from rice growth.

This ex-situ method of estimation can be done using GHG emission estimation tools. For this research project the chosen tools are the FAO’s Ex-ante Carbon Balance Tool (EX-ACT) and IRRI’s Source-selective and Emission-Adjusted GHG Calculator for Cropland (SECTOR).

……..

These calculators will use previously collected data on the areas of interest in Vietnam (i.e the Red River Delta and Mekong River Delta). From information such as the crop area, crop duration, irrigation regimes and fertilizer application the tools can provide estimates of emissions from a crop.
