Sharing Knowledge at FAO

I didnt come to Rome completely uneducated and my passion for Irish dairy farming came to the forefront ( for once). The Climate Change and Environment division of FAO does a series of webinars on topics surrounding climate change. Naturally I was volunteered by my supervisor to give a talk on how the Irish government and partners were adapting to Climate Change.

Using my regular charm and charisma and a Bachelors of Agricultural Sciences from Ireland’s top University ( After NUIG), I was able to put together a nice presentation on the steps that the Irish agricultural sector and all of its stakeholders are proactively adapting to climate change. Building on my foundation from UCD, integrating the policy making and adaptation strategies I learned at NUIG I then examined the stakeholder consultations such as the public consultations on adaptation and mitigation that the government has issued over the past year, but also from steps being taken through current policies like the GLAS scheme.

Luckily my past years working in the Irish Food Board (An Bord Bia) helped me with the more public private partnership at the manufacturing stage to give a full outline of the measures Ireland is taking to adapt to climate change. From farm to fork.  Supplemented with lovely photos courtesy of my family farm photographer, I was able to give an adequate presentation, although my knowledge of the Common Agricultural Policy caused me extra work much to my detriment…
