This traditional system was initially influenced by the need to keep and feed draught animals and the advantage of possibly producing high-value livestock products for selling. Blackburn  (1998) reported this system to cover about 2.5 billion hectares of land, of which 1.1billion hectares is arable rain-fed cropland, 0.2 billion hectares are irrigated cropland, and 1.2 billion are grassland.  Recently producing almost 50 percent of the world’s food and over 90 percent world milk supply, it could be considered one of the important in enhancing food security and livelihoods.
