The Climathon is an empowering movement offering everyone the opportunity to work with the existing toughest challenges facing their city, translating climate action solutions into tangible projects. But also supporting positive climate businesses by enabling change-makers and innovators to help humanity achieve zero emissions since the planet is spinning closer and closer to 1.5 degrees global warming temperature and its impacts already experienced at homes and cities. The movement needs everyone on board since the solution to climate change is up to everyone.
Global Climathon Day for Galway took place on 25th October 2019, at Portershed. The hackathon includes the NUIG team, professionals, developers, city authority as policymakers, and other citizens, all together brought the climate challenges facing our city and solutions that are likely going to work. The activities during the Climathon include; input of the city challenges, team formation, ideation, parallel workshops, group work, energizing events, pitch training, presentations, and prizes.
Ideas like climate education in secondary school, promotion and provision of healthy food at the university, the garden box from food waste to support biodiversity, and planting trees brought forward.
My group came up with the idea of an app that will link food from various groceries close to their expiry date, sold at a reduced price, and therefore avoid or reduce food waste.
