Research project

The impact of climate change on forage grasses in Ethiopian livestock systems.

Institution: National University of Ireland, Galway

Host Institution: International Livestock Research Institute, Feed and Forage programme, Ethiopia.

Objectives

  • To determine the current use and hectares planted compared with the potential area based on current climate and dairy systems.
  • To determine the trade-offs by modelling profitability of growing grasses for feed compared with crops.
  • To Model the effects of climate change on the potential area grown and profitability.
  • To Estimate the potential impact of identifying more drought tolerant lines of forage grasses as an adaptation to climate change.
