More Crop Per Drop- Sustainable Water Use For Robusta Coffee Production

Vietnam is the world’s largest producer of Robusta coffee and grown on more than 500,000 ha in the Central Highlands. The coffee industry in Vietnam provides employment for millions of people, however, coffee production is facing many issues.

Groundwater is the primary source of coffee irrigation during the dry season (January-April) in Vietnam. Due to over exploitation, water is declining rapidly and combined with climate change this could significantly impact coffee productivity in the future. In order to develop sustainable water use practices, Nestlé partnered with the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), the Western Highlands Agriculture and Forestry Science Institute (WASI), International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and Embden, Drishaus and Epping Consulting (EDE) to carry out a study on irrigation practices employed in coffee farming within Dak Lak Province.
