PRODUCTION UNITS

Zambia like many developing countries, has a big potential to increase its food production through production units (P.U.). This can reduce the escalating costs of running schools especially boarding expenses.  P.U. supplies to the boarding section can provide revolving fund for institutions through self-help i.e., institutions themselves. In this way schools would meet some of their quality food needs. P.U. would also provide links between theory with practical application in order to give pupils an all-round education while closing existing gap between manual and mental work by showing that the two are complementary. For the teaching of Agricultural science lessons, P.U. provides an excellent outdoor laboratory activities to firm the survival skills in learners.

unfortunately, in Zambia, manual labour of agriculture is anathema. Many able-bodied school pupils and student let alone school leavers; do not want to venture into agriculture. Often more than not, a conception that farming is for those who have failed in schools is held and only about 5% are willing to take up challenge of agricultural production. Therefore, there is a need to change the perception of farming in P.U. schools and Zambia.   P.U. in schools should elicit interest in farming . To realize this sustainable production is key.
