Research Title

Assessment of environmental impacts of coffee post-harvest processing, waste management & effluent management for improving Cool Farm Tool.

Research objectives

1. To map out the different post-harvest coffee mass flows
2. To improve the Cool Farm Tool by incorporating post-harvest parameters for coffee
3. To run CFT using the data collected to determine the impacts of post-harvest coffee practices on greenhouse gas emissions & water use.

Research problem statement

Though so many studies have proved that coffee post-harvest handling/value chain contributes to GHG emissions. However, there are still unanswered questions concerning how different methods of processing coffee and waste management can contribute to GHG emission. In the case of Uganda, little if nothing at all has been done on how Ugandan primary coffee processors treat or manage the  waste from coffee processing, therefore there is a gap of information that this study aim to fill concerning the different ways of managing coffee waste. hypothetically the coffee waste that is heaping for months to decompose, might be the source of methane, hence the purpose of this is study is to improve the Cool Farm Tool, to calculate and measure all the possible GHGs that might results from the different methods of processing and the waste flow management.
