As discussed in my previous post, it is crucial to understand the current scope of community gardens if we wish to potentially upscale them for promoting food security. This is but a drop in the bucket of what could become a large scale project to locate and map community gardens throughout Europe. Below, I have created a map with publicly available data from the Fédération Internationale des Jardins Familiaux, Community Gardens Ireland, Dublin Community Growers, and Social Farms & Gardens, which consolidates the locations of community gardens throughout Europe.
There are numerous other organizations, including the American Community Gardening Association, and Community Gardens Australia, which are attempting to map the scope of community garden projects. However, the current number of community gardens is truly unknown.
