Anaerobic digestion

The development of anaerobic digestion in China

AD REACTOR

The development of biogas in China started very early. As early as the end of the 19th century, simple biogas plants were built in the coastal cities of southern China. It was not until the 1970s that China began to formally introduce large-scale biogas plants to alleviate the energy shortage in rural China

There are currently two models of biogas in China, small-scale biogas digesters for farm families and biogas plants that centralize the production of biogas. In rural China, biogas production technologies are usually combined with agricultural production technologies such as farming and animal husbandry. In South China, farmers usually adopt the “pig-biogas-fruit” production model.

This model involves raising pigs within the farm boundaries and using them to produce manure and some other agricultural wastes such as straw to produce biogas and organic fertilizers through AD reaction. These products are then used in the land where fruits and vegetables are grown.
