Background

“Environmental and animal wellbeing benefits [and trade-offs] through the use of alternative and supplementary feed sources for ruminant livestock”
Ruminant livestock are essential to global food security and sustenance, as well as to the livelihoods of farmers and other food industry workers. They provide an assortment of goods, including flesh, milk, carcasses, wool, heat, and energy. Nonetheless, the environmental sustainability of ruminant production systems is a significant concern, particularly in terms of their impact on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (Gerber, 2013), water utilisation and quality, and biodiversity (Steinfeld, 2006).
