First set of samples from one of the onsite farms in Teagasc, Athenry

One of the farms on the Teasasc site in Athenry has reported to have extremely high roundworm egg counts. This farm however has a history of having Haemonchus contortus infections. For this reason i yesterday extracted DNA from a faecal sample using the QUIGEN stool DNA extraction kit. This was successful as it yielded positive results as seen form today’s NANODROP spectrometry reading. i also ran a PCR using the primers designed for the detection of H.contortus and i have left it to run for the evening. Tomorrow i will run the samples on a gel using gel electrophoresis and read it under UV light to determine if there is a H.contortus infection present on the farm.

It will be interesting to see if there will be an infection as these animals were dosed using ORAMEC which targets H.contortus. if the samples come up to be positive well then we may have a problem of resistant roundworms on the farm.
