Summer 2021

This Summer I will complete a literature review on “waste valorisation using anaerobic digestion (AD) to close loops in sustainable agri-food systems”. This review will complete my studies under the masters programme Climate change, Agriculture and Food security (CCAFS). This topic is of current importance as we look to decarbonise as much as possible and protect current resources. Waste valorisation describes making use of wastes, recycling or reusing the nutrients already present. Ireland has a huge agricultural community and a large national herd creating tonnes of waste or manure. As we become more environmentally conscious the reduction of agri emissions is essential in meeting goals set out by the European Union. Germany, Denmark and Sweden are front runners in AD with Ireland currently having less than 12 Anaerobic digestors capable of taking in waste and treating it. Biogas produced from AD has multiple uses within heat, electricity and transport. I will be reviewing the current literature on this area and locating possible gaps in research hoping to contribute value to the area.
