According to the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.wfp.org\/api\/documents\/WFP-0000114546\/download\/?_ga=2.189232619.1376057785.1602595862-2065215343.1602595862\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/docs.wfp.org\/api\/documents\/WFP-0000114546\/download\/?_ga=2.189232619.1376057785.1602595862-2065215343.1602595862\" target=\"_blank\">Global Report on Food Crises 2020<\/a>, the number of people suffering from acute food insecurity reached an all-time high in 2019. The current <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/diseases\/novel-coronavirus-2019\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/diseases\/novel-coronavirus-2019\" target=\"_blank\">COVID-19<\/a> pandemic, which is overwhelmingly impacting the world&#8217;s most vulnerable communities, has further demonstrated that new and daunting threats are emerging in the already complex food value chain. The pandemic has intensified pre-existing drivers of food insecurity, mainly due to decreasing economic activity, as reported by the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/ebrary.ifpri.org\/utils\/getfile\/collection\/p15738coll2\/id\/134043\/filename\/134253.pdf\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"http:\/\/ebrary.ifpri.org\/utils\/getfile\/collection\/p15738coll2\/id\/134043\/filename\/134253.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">September 2020 update analysis on food security in times of COVID-19<\/a>. Furthermore, there are several other central concerns, including climate change, political instabilities, infectious diseases, hunger, malnutrition, food losses and waste, which require our immediate attention in order to increase the resilience of the current global food system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ant%C3%B3nio_Guterres\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ant%C3%B3nio_Guterres\" target=\"_blank\">United Nations Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres<\/a> is scheduled to convene this year&#8217;s Food Systems Summit as a bold move to stay on track and achieve the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/goals\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/goals\" target=\"_blank\">Sustainable Development Goals<\/a> (SDGs) by 2030. The <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/food-systems-summit\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/food-systems-summit\" target=\"_blank\">2021 UN Food Systems Summit<\/a> (UNFSS) aims at starting an exciting journey in which we can collectively transform our food systems in line with the set 2030 Agenda. Five action tracks of the UNFSS were released on the 4<sup>th<\/sup> of September 2020 by the UN Deputy Secretary-General <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amina_J._Mohammed\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amina_J._Mohammed\" target=\"_blank\">Amina J. Mohammed<\/a> and UN Special Envoy Agnes Kalibata. The tracks were established to address synergies and potential trade-offs and identify groundbreaking actions, innovative ideas and methodologies that can deliver broad advantages across all <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/goals\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/goals\" target=\"_blank\">SDGs<\/a>. The action tracks include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li>Ensuring access to safe and nutritious food for all (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/food-systems-summit\/action-tracks\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/food-systems-summit\/action-tracks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Action Track 1<\/a>)<\/li><li>Shifting to sustainable consumption patterns (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/food-systems-summit\/action-tracks\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/food-systems-summit\/action-tracks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Action Track 2<\/a>)<\/li><li>Boosting nature-positive production at scale (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/food-systems-summit\/action-tracks\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/food-systems-summit\/action-tracks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Action Track 3<\/a>)<\/li><li>Advancing equitable livelihoods (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/food-systems-summit\/action-tracks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Action Track 4<\/a>)<\/li><li>Building resilience to vulnerabilities, shocks, and stresses (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/food-systems-summit\/action-tracks\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/food-systems-summit\/action-tracks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Action Track 5<\/a>)<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>On the road to the 2021 UNFSS, Action Track 3 (AT3) possess an enormous potential to foster innovations aimed at scaling food security and environmental sustainability. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/wwf.panda.org\/wwf_offices\/wwf_international\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/wwf.panda.org\/wwf_offices\/wwf_international\/\" target=\"_blank\">WWF International<\/a>&#8216;s Global Leader, Food Practice, Joao Campari, chairs the UNFSS AT3 Leadership Team with the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unccd.int\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.unccd.int\/\" target=\"_blank\">UNCCD<\/a>) as the anchoring agency. AT3 focuses on ramping up nature-friendly food production practices to meet the basic human rights to nutritious and healthy food while operating within the proposed quantitative <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stockholmresilience.org\/research\/planetary-boundaries\/planetary-boundaries\/about-the-research\/the-nine-planetary-boundaries.html\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.stockholmresilience.org\/research\/planetary-boundaries\/planetary-boundaries\/about-the-research\/the-nine-planetary-boundaries.html\" target=\"_blank\">planetary boundaries<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nature-Positive Food Production Systems (AT3)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nature-positive systems of food production (as a form of Nature-based Solutions (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.naturebasedsolutionsinitiative.org\/what-are-nature-based-solutions\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.naturebasedsolutionsinitiative.org\/what-are-nature-based-solutions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NbS<\/a>)) recognize that biodiversity supports the provision of all ecosystem services that the human society relies on, and that these services are essential to the achievement of the SDGs, the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/process-and-meetings\/the-paris-agreement\/the-paris-agreement\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/process-and-meetings\/the-paris-agreement\/the-paris-agreement\" target=\"_blank\">Paris Agreement<\/a>, and the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbd.int\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.cbd.int\/\" target=\"_blank\">Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)<\/a>. NbS leverage ecosystems&#8217; ability to minimize greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while also assisting us in responding to the adverse effects of climate change and reducing biodiversity loss. The specific contributions of AT3 will be &#8211; the achievement of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/goals\/goal12\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/goals\/goal12\" target=\"_blank\">SDG12<\/a> (Responsible Consumption and Production), <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/goals\/goal13\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/goals\/goal13\" target=\"_blank\">SDG13<\/a> (Climate Action), <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/goals\/goal14\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/goals\/goal14\" target=\"_blank\">SDG14<\/a> (Life Below Water) and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/goals\/goal15\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/goals\/goal15\" target=\"_blank\">SDG15<\/a> (Life on Land).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Green Revolution laid foundations for increased agricultural productivity at the expense of environmental health. According to the WWF&#8217;s <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/c402277.ssl.cf1.rackcdn.com\/publications\/1187\/files\/original\/LPR2018_Full_Report_Spreads.pdf\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/c402277.ssl.cf1.rackcdn.com\/publications\/1187\/files\/original\/LPR2018_Full_Report_Spreads.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Living Planet Study 2018<\/a>, the size of mammalian, bird, fish, reptile, and amphibian populations has declined by 60% on average in just over 40 years. This is a clear testament to the adverse impact of anthropogenic activities on environmental sustainability and biodiversity integrity. It is therefore imperative to establish channels that promote the <strong>Nature-Positive Agenda<\/strong> on a global scale. According to a recent <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/press\/2020\/07\/395-million-new-jobs-by-2030-if-businesses-prioritize-nature-says-world-economic-forum\/\" target=\"_blank\">World Economic Forum (WEF) report<\/a>, nature-based economic initiatives such as recycled industrial materials (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.plantagbiosciences.org\/people\/noel-ndlovu\/2021\/02\/11\/circular-economy-a-new-paradigm-for-scaling-macroeconomic-resilience-livelihood-sustainability-and-carbon-neutrality-in-the-industrial-4-0-era\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.plantagbiosciences.org\/people\/noel-ndlovu\/2021\/02\/11\/circular-economy-a-new-paradigm-for-scaling-macroeconomic-resilience-livelihood-sustainability-and-carbon-neutrality-in-the-industrial-4-0-era\/\" target=\"_blank\">Circularity<\/a>), healthy diets, and \u201csmart\u201d building construction, could generate $US 10.1 trillion in economic opportunities and create 395 million jobs by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.plantagbiosciences.org\/people\/noel-ndlovu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/138\/2021\/02\/image-4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-245\" width=\"660\" height=\"428\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.plantagbiosciences.org\/people\/noel-ndlovu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/138\/2021\/02\/image-4.png 602w, https:\/\/www.plantagbiosciences.org\/people\/noel-ndlovu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/138\/2021\/02\/image-4-500x324.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><figcaption> <strong>Figure 1:<\/strong> The diagram (above) provides a concise collection of recommendations for the achievement of net positive environmental outcomes in relation to the baseline. In addition, the intuitive simplicity of the idea of the Four Steps (Renew-Reuse-Restore-Refrain) as well as its expansive applicability to a variety of users and circumstances may promote widespread ownership, making it possible to account for apparently disparate acts across food systems. <strong>Source: <\/strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/conservationhierarchy.org\/what-is-conservation-hierarchy\/#\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/conservationhierarchy.org\/what-is-conservation-hierarchy\/#\" target=\"_blank\">Conservation Hierarchy<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The global expansion of discourses on land tenure security, food justice, and subsidy provisions are all part of a shift to a better, fairer agri-food system. As a result, it is important to make an immediate transition to a modern agricultural system that is both socially just and environmentally sustainable. This is embodied in <strong>Agroecology <\/strong>&#8211;  a sustainable agriculture approach that works with, rather than against, ecosystems (Altieri, 2018; Rosset and Altieri, 2017) and rural land-rights campaigns. Agroecological practices lead to the realization of the SDGs by providing sufficient food for the increasing global population, promoting environmental restoration, minimizing the dependence on non-renewable energy and ensuring the economic viability of low-input agricultural systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Agroecological Innovations for Sustainable and Resilient Food Systems<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Agroecology as a science employs ecological concepts to regulate species interactions in order to increase crop production and other services such as insect pest control and nutrient retention while minimizing the use of non-renewable agro-inputs (i.e. pesticides) and associated production costs. Gliessman (2021) highlighted that, agroecology moves \u2018from a narrow concern of farming practices to the whole universe of interactions among crop plants, soil, soil organisms, insects, insect enemies, environmental conditions, and management activities and beyond that to the effects of farming systems on surrounding natural ecosystem\u2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"602\" height=\"389\" src=\"https:\/\/www.plantagbiosciences.org\/people\/noel-ndlovu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/138\/2021\/03\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-259\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.plantagbiosciences.org\/people\/noel-ndlovu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/138\/2021\/03\/image.png 602w, https:\/\/www.plantagbiosciences.org\/people\/noel-ndlovu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/138\/2021\/03\/image-500x323.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" \/><figcaption>                                  <strong>Figure 1: <\/strong>Principles of Agroecology. <strong> Source: <\/strong>Nicholls <em>et al.<\/em> (2016)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Agroecology has supported and fed smallholder farming communities around the world, and according to<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.indiaenvironmentportal.org.in\/files\/Weathering_The_Climate_Crisis.pdf\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"http:\/\/www.indiaenvironmentportal.org.in\/files\/Weathering_The_Climate_Crisis.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"> studies <\/a>focusing on these sections of the population, agroecological practices are more resilient to the adverse effects of climate change. Agroecology encompasses the recycling of nutrients and energy; the integration of crop and livestock farming (mixed farming); and diversified farming practices that promote the conservation of genetic resources (such as agroforestry and agrisilviculture). Moreover, agroecological systems utilize natural processes for pest management and soil fertility improvement (e.g. through mulching, polycultures, and cover crops).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pan-uk.org\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/Plate-of-vegetables-Shutterstock-Cover.jpg\" alt=\"Agroecology can help farmers feed the world without the use of pesticides\" \/><figcaption>Crop Diversity is Central to  Food and Nutrition Security in Resource-constrained Communities. <strong>Source:<\/strong> <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pan-uk.org\/agroecology-threatens-the-existence-of-a-toxic-pesticide-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pesticide Action Network UK<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Transitioning to agroecology has <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/ffcc.co.uk\/assets\/downloads\/FFCC-2020-Farming-Smarter-The-case-for-agroecological-enterprise.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">multiple and substantial benefits <\/a>to farmer communities, nutrition, soils and the environment, but it requires far more than just financial investments and land. Thus, instead of a traditional, monoculture-based systems that rely heavily on external inputs, we need to establish sustainable and restorative agricultural systems that aim to improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmer communities and promote biodiversity conservation under the prevailing climate vulnerabilities. Strategic initiatives that support marginalized local food producers &#8211; through a fair market share system with multinational corporations &#8211; should be established. In addition, shorter supply chains (the path that food takes from farm to fork) are required in the food system to provide more value to farmers and local, healthier, seasonal, and affordable food to consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Table 1:<\/strong> Leading Institutions Supporting the Adoption of Agroecology as a Nature-Positive Production Model<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Programme\/Institution<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Background Profile<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arc2020.eu\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.arc2020.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Agricultural and Rural Convention (ARC)<\/a><\/strong><\/td><td>Platform for organizations in the EU that work together for good food, good agriculture, and better rural policies<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cordis.europa.eu\/project\/id\/101000478\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/cordis.europa.eu\/project\/id\/101000478\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The EU-funded AE4EU Project<\/a><\/strong><\/td><td>The project contributes to agroecology research and innovation through numerous strategic goals.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/uniseco-project.eu\/articles\/3\/about\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/uniseco-project.eu\/articles\/3\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UNISECO<\/a><\/strong><\/td><td>\u2018European research project aiming to develop innovative approaches to enhance the understanding of socio-economic and policy drivers and barriers for further development and implementation of agro-ecological practices in EU farming systems.\u2019<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agroecologyfund.org\/about-us\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.agroecologyfund.org\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The AgroEcology Fund (AEF)<\/a><\/strong><\/td><td>A \u2018multi-donor fund supporting agroecological practices and policies\u2019 across the globe.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Table 1<\/strong> presents a summarized list of some prominent projects that are advancing the agroecology agenda across the globe. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biovision.ch\/en\/home\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.biovision.ch\/en\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\">Biovision<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.icipe.org\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"http:\/\/www.icipe.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">ICIPE<\/a> are also implementing the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biovision.ch\/en\/projects\/sub-saharan-africa\/push-pull-diversity-through-participatory-research\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.biovision.ch\/en\/projects\/sub-saharan-africa\/push-pull-diversity-through-participatory-research\/\" target=\"_blank\">Push-Pull<\/a> project in sub-Saharan Africa&#8217;s cereal production systems. The forthcoming UNFSS, the first of its kind, provides a rare opportunity to bring in stakeholders from across the entire food supply chain to discuss the food crisis and break down barriers to long-term food system transformation. Agroecology is needed to conserve natural resources, ensure food security and improve livelihoods at the grassroots level.
