What is the significance?
Most organizations or sectors are becoming increasingly aware of their increasing obligation to reduce their carbon footprint in order to meet the target set by the Paris Agreement which is to limit global warming to 1.5˚C (IPCC).The art and music sector are no exception. In fact, the art and music sector have a leading role to play in reducing emissions.
Where are the emissions coming from?
The largest source of emissions as a result of the music festival industry is due to transport as it often involves the use of transport in the form of aviation
What is currently being done to tackle this problem?
Many artists in the music industry are becoming increasingly conscious of the impact of travel often associated with music events and concerts. As a result, many music bands or artists are making clear efforts to reduce their travel emissions. One such well known international rock band, Coldplay have announced measures they have adopted in order to reduce the impact of air travel emissions associated with music events. These measures include limiting travel where unavoidable by only flying with sustainable aviation fuels. Coldplay’s efforts to reduce their emissions have resulted in a decrease of almost 50% less carbon in their world tour (ColdPlay (2023). “emissions update.” from https://www.coldplay.com/emissions-update/).
