{"id":435,"date":"2017-08-28T12:31:02","date_gmt":"2017-08-28T12:31:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.plantagbiosciences.org\/people\/john-cleary\/?p=435"},"modified":"2017-08-29T08:33:10","modified_gmt":"2017-08-29T08:33:10","slug":"nobody-lives-in-the-global-average","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.plantagbiosciences.org\/people\/john-cleary\/2017\/08\/28\/nobody-lives-in-the-global-average\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Nobody lives in the global average&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/environment\/flooding-scalp-hill-in-donegal-became-the-mountain-that-moved-1.3198428\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Donegal<\/a>, this week it's <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/live\/2017\/aug\/28\/ex-hurricane-harvey-houston-flooded-as-catastrophe-unfolds-in-texas-latest-updates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Houston<\/a>\u00a0(see also the Mann article linked below), in the weeks prior it was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2017\/08\/death-toll-rises-northern-vietnam-flash-floods-170804061413359.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vietnam<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2017\/08\/india-bihar-state-reels-unprecedented-flooding-170820174216830.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">India<\/a>, and numerous other places.<\/p>\n<p>Heavy rainfall and flooding were\u00a0also identified by the photovoice participants in My Loi as their primary worry in relation to climate-related risks:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_436\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-436\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-436 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.plantagbiosciences.org\/people\/john-cleary\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2017\/08\/Flood_bed.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.plantagbiosciences.org\/people\/john-cleary\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2017\/08\/Flood_bed.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.plantagbiosciences.org\/people\/john-cleary\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/16\/2017\/08\/Flood_bed-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-436\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Watermarks on the wall in this house are a reminder of the previous year's floods.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Is the seemingly endless news of 'catastrophic' flooding events the result of a hyper-vigilant and ubiquitous media presence or is there a real climate-related trend? Studies have shown that as the planet warms, rates of evaporation will increase, and the air will hold more moisture, leading to what sound like manageable increases in precipitation. No more than with temperature however, averages can be deceptive (for example, the <a href=\"https:\/\/nsidc.org\/cryosphere\/arctic-meteorology\/climate_change.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arctic is warming<\/a> at a much faster rate than the global average). As remarked in a 2016 article in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/nclimate\/journal\/v6\/n5\/full\/nclimate2966.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nature Climate Change<\/a> 'Global average precipitation is expected to increase moderately with global warming, but nobody lives in the global average.'<\/p>\n<p><strong>Future trends?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While there is considerable uncertainty, particularly in relation to spatial variability, it looks like the future holds further increases in extreme rainfall events in both wet and dry regions, even while the overall trend may be towards a 'wet gets wetter, dry gets drier' scenario (<span class=\"vcard author\"><span class=\"fn\">Collins, M.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<i>et al<\/i>. in\u00a0<cite class=\"book\">Climate Change 2013: The Physical Science Basis<\/cite>\u00a0(eds Stocker, T. F.\u00a0<i>et al<\/i>.)\u00a0<span class=\"start-page\">1029<\/span>\u2013<span class=\"end-page\">1136<\/span>\u00a0(IPCC, Cambridge Univ.
