My project (Title TBA) will be on Anaerobic digestion, a marvelous process that converts organic waste to biogas, which can be refined to methane and used as a biofuel. There is a long history of AD but i’m going to give you (The reader) a crash course. The basis of anaerobic digestion was first noted by Italian scientist Alessandro Volta back in 1776 when he was examining marsh gas in a swiz lake. He was drawn to marsh gas by other scientists who noted that there was a tendency for ”flammable air” in swamps. The source of the flammability was methane, a term coined by August Wilhelm von Hofmann in 1886. Lets put the chemistry and nomenclature aside for a moment and talk about the process itself. In my research found that what we call an anaerobic digester has its roots in a digester created in India in a leper colony around 1859. Anaerobic digestion has come a long way since then with many innovations that came with the digital age. Its my hope that it can be expanded further into a household name as a powerful tool for society. That was a nice second blog post! I don’t know where I will be doing my project yet but hopefully I will know by my next post. Until then its good bye for me Slan leat agus go raibh maith agat!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
This blog has got to start somewhere so how about a little history?
