I\u2019m nearing submission of our academic paper\u2014thanks to robust collaboration with my co-authors\u2014and the core argument coming into focus is clear:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While legislative ESG frameworks like the EU\u2019s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) offer transparency, I have now audited 1000\u2019s of pages of company\u2019s sustainability statements. They often fall short in driven meaningful, aligned corporate behaviour related to Climate Change mitigation . In contrast, third-party accreditation programs\u2014such as Bord Bia\u2019s Origin Green\u2014demonstrate a more actionable, resilient model for assessing and encouraging sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The CSRD has undoubtedly elevated transparency. It mandates standardized, audited, and comparable ESG reporting, grounded in the principle of double materiality\u2014requiring firms to report both on how sustainability issues affect them and how they impact the world<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Risk of Greenwashing and Selective Reporting: Despite mandates, firms may selectively present data to enhance their image\u2014a problem compounded by flexibility in metrics, variations in intreprating standards, and narrative discretion<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In short: CSRD helps shine a spotlight\u2014but the light doesn\u2019t always translate into change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
