The &#8216;re-wilding&#8217; of urban landscapes through the somewhat haphazard planting of native wildflower seed bombs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"A Journey Into the Magical World of Wild Flower Garden Seed Bombs Ireland\" width=\"525\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/28d3pjrPOVU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I have always viewed this as a positive thing,  for both native pollinators and biodiversity in general and I am well and truly on the bandwagon! This is made evident by the web page I have dedicated to updating anyone who will listen on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plantagbiosciences.org\/people\/angharad-johnson\/bee-bombs-ireland\/\">progress of my Beebomb garden.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That was until I came across a recent article in The Irish Times;  an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/environment\/botanists-not-wild-about-trinity-college-s-wildflower-meadow-1.4649317\">Expose&#8217; on the so called &#8220;Trinity Debate&#8221;<\/a> by Michael Viney. Apparently, some botanists from Dublin&#8217;s Naturalists\u2019 Field Club (DNFC) are not wild about Trinity College\u2019s newly planted wildflower meadow&#8230;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"617\" height=\"328\" src=\"https:\/\/www.plantagbiosciences.org\/people\/angharad-johnson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/131\/2021\/08\/image-85.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2495\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.plantagbiosciences.org\/people\/angharad-johnson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/131\/2021\/08\/image-85.png 617w, https:\/\/www.plantagbiosciences.org\/people\/angharad-johnson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/131\/2021\/08\/image-85-300x159.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 617px) 100vw, 617px\" \/><figcaption>The wildflower meadow at Trinity\u2019s front gates. Photograph: Nick Bradshaw<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Their argument raises some valid points including the displacement of native species and the potentially unnatural composition of species that grow from a typical wildflower mix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The article states-<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;<em>To the DNFC ,\u201csimply introducing colourful flowers &#8230; at best provides a short-term food supply for some common insects that are not threatened.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The typical mix of plant species contained in \u201cwildflower\u201d seed packets \u201cis never found growing together in the wild\u201d. Natural habitats, formed by local conditions, grow the plants adapted to them and these colonise the ground by natural means. Conserving natural habitats should be the priority. And even mowing old lawns less often can allow native species already in the soil bank to flower and set seed.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized is-style-default\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gardeningetc.com\/news\/do-beebombs-work-garden-experts-explain\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.plantagbiosciences.org\/people\/angharad-johnson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/131\/2021\/08\/image-83.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2488\" width=\"674\" height=\"407\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.plantagbiosciences.org\/people\/angharad-johnson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/131\/2021\/08\/image-83.png 727w, https:\/\/www.plantagbiosciences.org\/people\/angharad-johnson\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/131\/2021\/08\/image-83-300x182.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 674px) 100vw, 674px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Just toss it in the ground and enjoy a wildflower meadow?
